cook bell peppers

Bell peppers are nutritious, delicious, and can be prepared thousands of ways.

Here are a few tips for choosing the right colour and a few recipe ideas to keep in mind the next time you visit Super C!

Choosing the right bell peppers

At Super C, you can pick up bell peppers in four different colours: red, green, yellow, and orange. What's the difference? Their level of ripeness! Green bell peppers are picked before they change colour. They taste slightly more bitter and are perfect for pan roasting or cooking en papillote. Orange and yellow bell peppers are more mild, juicy and sweet, making them a favourite of kids! They're delicious raw or in a salad. Last but not least, the red bell pepper is the ripest. It's perfect for roasting or in salads.

The difference between each type of bell pepper can be subtle so don't hesitate to try them all to find your favourite!

Grilled bell peppers are sure to become a BBQ classic. Start by slicing the bell pepper in half and remove the seeds. Grilled bell peppers are a delicious side for your meals but can also be added to myriad dishes. When cooked on the BBQ, they'll add a pleasant hint of smokiness to your soups, stews, and even salads.

Tip: You can turn your grilled red bell peppers into a delicious dip. Combine your grilled red bell peppers with a bit of mayonnaise, lemon juice, and one or two garlic cloves and pulse in a food processor or blender until you get a puree. Adjust the seasoning (salt, pepper, garlic) to your taste and you're all set!

Just like potatoes, bell peppers can be stuffed with your favourite ingredients as well as any leftovers in the fridge. There are myriad recipes to choose from, but we recommend ground beef, onion, cheese, and rice. Start by cooking the ground beef and sliced onions with some salt and pepper. Prepare the rice while the beef cooks. Once everything is ready, combine the rice and ground beef. Hollow the bell peppers and stuff them with your mixture. Add shredded cheese on top and bake in the oven at 350 for about 30 minutes. What's the best bell pepper for this recipe? Try them all or pick the one on sale for more savings!

Colourful bell peppers are a tasty side for any meal that pairs well with grilled vegetables. Preparing a veggie sauté is incredibly easy: after hollowing the bell pepper and slicing the other vegetables (onions, mushrooms, asparagus), heat a bit of olive oil in a pan on medium high. Once the oil is hot enough, add the vegetables and season with your favourite spices. Depending on what your main meal is, you can add garlic, paprika, or even cumin. Once done cooking, you can add parmesan cheese or shredded cheddar to enhance the flavours of your vegetables.

Tip: Bell peppers are also delicious when prepared en papillote with other vegetables. More information here.
